Permit questions come up constantly, mostly from people who've read three different forums with three different answers. Here's what's actually required, as of the current season.
Forest entry permits
Most Uttarakhand treks pass through reserved or protected forest areas, requiring a forest department entry permit. This is arranged by your trek operator (us, in your case) using your ID details, submitted ahead of the trek — you don't need to visit any office yourself.
What ID you need to carry
A government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, or driving license) is required in original, not a photocopy, at the forest checkpoint. We ask for this at booking so it's registered correctly with the permit, but you still need to physically carry it on the trek.
Age and medical declarations
Some routes, particularly higher-altitude ones, require a basic medical fitness self-declaration — existing conditions, medications, and a rough fitness self-assessment. This isn't a formality we can skip; forest department checkpoints do occasionally verify this paperwork is in order.
Restricted or special-permission areas
A small number of Uttarakhand routes near the international border (parts of the Nanda Devi buffer zone, for instance) require additional permissions beyond a standard forest permit, sometimes with longer lead times. None of our current standard treks fall into this category, but if you're asking about something more remote, tell us the specific route and we'll confirm what's actually needed.
What happens if paperwork isn't in order
Genuinely: you can be turned back at the checkpoint. This is part of why we collect ID and medical declarations properly at booking rather than as an afterthought — it's not bureaucratic box-ticking, it's the difference between starting your trek on time and not starting it at all.
