We get this question more than any other on WhatsApp: "Kedarkantha or Brahmatal — which one should I do first?" Both are 6-day winter treks in Uttarakhand, both sit around 12,000–12,500 ft, both are marketed as beginner routes. So here's the actual difference, not the marketing version.
The terrain is genuinely different
Kedarkantha is a summit trek — you climb to an actual peak with a 360° view. Brahmatal is a lake trek — the destination is two frozen lakes, with Mt. Trishul visible from the ridge above them, not a summit push.
If "I want to say I summited something" matters to you, that's Kedarkantha. If you want a gentler, more meditative trek with less of a single big push, that's Brahmatal.
Crowds and timing
Kedarkantha is more famous, which means bigger batches from most operators and a more crowded base camp during peak season (late December–mid January). Brahmatal sees noticeably fewer trekkers on the same dates, which is part of why we usually recommend it to people who specifically want a quieter trek.
Difficulty, honestly
Both are labeled "easy-moderate," and both are legitimately doable as a first Himalayan trek. If pushed to rank them, Brahmatal's daily distances are slightly gentler, but Kedarkantha's summit day has a longer, steeper final push. Neither should be attempted with zero physical preparation — see our Hampta Pass fitness guide for a training baseline that applies to both.
Our actual recommendation
If you can only do one: Kedarkantha, because the summit-trek format is more universally satisfying for a first-timer.
If you're doing your second or third winter trek and want something with fewer people around you: Brahmatal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes — many of our trekkers do Kedarkantha in December and Brahmatal in February, since they are both drivable from the same base region (Sankri and Lohajung areas are close but distinct).
Pricing is usually similar across operators for both, since group size and duration are comparable. Check our full trek listing for current small-batch departures.
