We only run treks in these two states, so we get asked constantly: which one should a first-timer pick? Here's the honest answer, not a diplomatic non-answer.
Terrain and scenery
Uttarakhand's marquee routes (Kedarkantha, Brahmatal, Har Ki Dun) tend toward dense pine/oak forest opening into snow meadows — a more enclosed, intimate feel. Himachal's routes (Hampta Pass, Bhrigu Lake, Beas Kund) tend toward wider, more dramatic valley views, especially anything crossing toward Lahaul/Spiti's high-desert terrain.
Best season
This is the real deciding factor for most people. Uttarakhand's winter treks run December through February/March — snow trekking specifically. Himachal's classic treks mostly run May through October — green-season, not snow. If you want snow, Uttarakhand in winter. If you're traveling between April and October, Himachal is usually the better-timed option.
Accessibility
Uttarakhand's popular trek bases (Sankri, Lohajung) are drivable from Delhi/Dehradun in 8–10 hours. Himachal's bases (Manali, Kasol) are similar or slightly longer depending on traffic through the hill roads, but Manali has better flight/bus connectivity for longer-distance travelers.
Our actual recommendation
If you're free in winter and want a snow trek: Kedarkantha, Uttarakhand. If you're traveling in summer/monsoon shoulder season: Hampta Pass or Bhrigu Lake, Himachal. If you genuinely can't decide, tell us your travel dates directly — this is usually a five-minute conversation, not something that needs a long research process.
